Get ready for a great year with Beta Gamma Sigma! Here’s the latest from Global HQ!

We truly appreciate the feedback we receive year-round, but especially in the annual chapter survey. Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete it! We strive to provide all our chapters with the best support possible, and your feedback helps us do that.

We recently voted in a new chair of BGS’ board of governors, Dr. Mariëlle Heijltjes of Maastricht University. If you happen to see her at an AACSB event, please introduce yourself and congratulate her on the new role.

Below are few “housekeeping” items to keep in mind as we roll out a new academic year.

Member certificate update

Effective July 1, 2019, the BGS certificates were updated based on feedback from chapters and approval by our Board of Governors. This change affects the two lines that the chapter signs. What once read Chapter President will now read Dean and what once read Chapter Secretary now reads Chapter Advisor/University Representative. We hope this update will provide greater clarity to our chapters moving forward. (Don’t forget: student officers CANNOT sign certificates.)

Chapter Honoree Nominations

Chapters must submit to Global Headquarters a completed Chapter Honoree Nomination Form and supply order (a $250 fee) for each chapter honoree. Be sure the spelling of the name is correct since the member certificate will be printed from the information on this form. Nomination forms should be submitted 4 to 6 weeks before the presentation date to ensure delivery before the ceremony. Orders placed after this timeframe may incur additional shipping charges.

Membership Eligibility

Eligibility reminder: students are eligible at an undergraduate level if they are in the top 10% of their class at the halfway point of their second (sophomore) year, or anytime in their third or fourth (junior or senior) year. Master’s students are eligible at the halfway point of their program and must rank in the top 20% of their class. If it is a multiyear program, they are eligible after the first year. Doctoral students are eligible once they’ve completed all coursework and defended their dissertation.

Chapter Toolkit

The updated Chapter Toolkit provides great resources such as ceremony scripts, sample letters, event ideas and more. Find these under the “Collegiate Chapters” section of our website.

Chapter Leader Training Opportunities

Mark your calendars for these upcoming training sessions! The Chapter Operations team recommends each chapter sends at least one representative to attend one of the trainings every 1 to 3 years so the chapter stays up to date with information from Global HQ and has the opportunity to network with chapter leaders through the world! We hope to see you there!

      Alumni Chapter Update

Congratulations to the following Alumni Chapter Award winners!

      • Outstanding Alumni Chapter: New Zealand Alumni Chapter

Program: Thought Lab Series. As part of the desire to provide more value to BGS NZ members, The NZ Alumni Chapter created The Thought Lab series. This series of presentations held monthly (within semester terms) on a range of topical and timely subjects which are of interest to members. Such topics have included Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies, what it takes to purchase your first home/become a first-time property investor, leadership tools and frameworks, and what the future economy/workforce will look like.

      • Outstanding Alumni Chapter Member: Alex Waddell

Alex Waddell works with the New Zealand Alumni Chapter. Alex has been instrumental in building the BGS brand in NZ. He developed a strategic plan which outlines three stakeholders, and based off this plan, made significant progress providing value to BGS members.

Don’t forget to update your new student officers with Global HQ!

We have training resources scheduled throughout the rest of the year, and don’t want them to miss out! Engaging students early in the school year also helps chapters earn engagement points toward the Chapter Honor Roll.

There will also be a student officer information session and networking session at the GLS! This will be a great opportunity for them to make connections and share and gather ideas. Information will be shared at check-in.

Not sure if names have been submitted? Send us a quick message.

      BGS Gives Back

Need an activity idea to kick off the new semester? Plan a service activity and give back to your local community! If your chapter is just starting out, consider partnering with another campus organization to get more volunteers.

Junior Achievement (JA) helps to educate young people about the value of business education; you can join existing JA events or plan something that’s just for your chapter. And our partnership with JA makes finding opportunities easier than ever!

When your service event is complete, fill out the BGS Gives Back form to earn honor roll points for your chapter.

Help your students start their career on the right foot with the ELCP! This course helps students learn about how to handle complex moral situations that they’re likely to experience throughout their careers.
