Beta Gamma Sigma Awards Robert Carr the
Medallion for Entrepreneurship
Beta
Gamma Sigma, the international business honor society, recently
named Robert Carr, chairman and CEO, Heartland Payment Systems,
a recipient of its 2009 Medallion for Entrepreneurship. The award
is presented annually to individuals that contribute significantly
to the strength of the economy, combining innovative business achievement
with service to humanity.
“It is a pleasure for the Society to present this honor to
Mr. Carr,” said George E. Stevens, president of Beta Gamma
Sigma. “He is a pioneer in his industry and has dedicated
himself to helping others throughout his career.”
Seton Hall University nominated Carr for the Beta Gamma Sigma Medallion
for Entrepreneurship. He is one of five recipients of this year’s
award. The other 2009 honorees are Charlie Amato, chairman, Southwest
Business Corporation; Gary Dudley, president, Southwest Business
Corporation; Kenneth R. Bartee, former president, McDonald Bradley
Inc.; and Mary Lou Quinlan, founder and CEO, Just Ask a Woman.
Carr co-founded Heartland Payment Systems with Heartland Bank in
1997. Today, Heartland Payment Systems is one of the top firms in
the payments industry. Under Carr’s guidance, the company
has increased its workforce from 25 to 2,900 employees and its client
locations from 2,500 to 250,000.
With the support and leadership of Carr, Heartland Payment Systems
has also established itself as a thought leader. In 2006, Carr spearheaded
The Merchant Bill of Rights, a public advocacy initiative created
to educate merchants about fair credit and debit card processing
practices. The Merchant Bill of Rights is now formally endorsed
by 150 state trade organizations, merchants and business partners.
Carr’s innovative leadership has helped drive his humanitarian
interests. In 1991, he and his wife founded Give Something Back
Foundation, a non-profit that funds scholarships for disadvantaged
children, recognizes teaching excellence and provides donations
to many charitable organizations.
Beta Gamma Sigma established the Medallion for Entrepreneurship
in 1994. Individuals are nominated by Beta Gamma Sigma deans, faculty
advisors and members of the board of governors. They are selected
based on their long-term, proven ability to overcome risk in new
venture development, adapt to markets and competitive environments,
provide service to humanity, and establish themselves as models
of ethical business leadership. Recipients are and announced to
the Society during the International Honoree Luncheon at the Annual
Meeting of AACSB International each spring.
